Reviews of Insight Editions
Dylan Deppe
Was very excited to hear about Insight Editions' announcement for the Art and Soul of Dune book and companion album composed by Hans Zimmer. I waited with bated breath (lmao) for a month or so from the announcement to when you could download the album for free on Dune: Part One's American release (as was advertised).
Can't remember if they pushed it a day earlier (10-21-2021) than what was initially advertised, but I went to download the music on my PC in the background at work on that Friday (10-22-2021). Instead of it just downloading, was asked how I wanted to stream or which website to download from.
Didn't have my iTunes (or is it Apple Music now?) password handy so I didn't mess with (remember, I'm at work in that moment). Got busy with on-call work Saturday (10-23-2021) after I saw the film, and was busy all day the next day (10-24-2021) at my other job.
Went to download that free music I waited a month or so for, as was advertised, on Monday (10-25-2021) before I went to the office. I had the page on Insight Editions' website bookmarked on my PC (for a month or whatever), scrolled down to the album part (it's still Monday 10-25-2021 btw), and was greeted with a hilariously-heinous renaming of the "Download Free Album" button to "Preview the Music."
I hit the button out of befuddlement thinking, "Surely they haven't made it not free anymore so quickly. It's only been four or five days. Did I actually imagine this whole conundrum?" I couldn't even preview the music on the other site I was brought to (I thought you could still download/preview iTunes or whatever it's called now on PC; I use iTunes [or whatever] occasionally only on my Mac in case you're wondering).
Emailed myself the link with racing and confused thoughts in my mind. Opened the link on my Mac, hit the dastardly "Preview" button, slowly accepting my dire circumstances (lol), and nothing would still work. Opened iTunes (still on Mojave [don't judge me], so that's what it's called on my computer), searched for the album and was essentially told, "That'll be $10.99, good sir."
I was furious. I didn't expect the album to be free for even more than two weeks at best. Did they make it not free on that weekend's Sunday (10-24-2021) or even Saturday (10-23-2021)? Was it actually ever free to download?
Cleared my mind, went to work, and forgot about it. Previewed every song off the Art and Soul of Dune album later. It was all pretty-bland ambient music (I don't dislike ambient music; much of Zimmer's Man of Steel score is ambient, and that's legitimately my favorite film score ever; Interstellar is pretty good too), so I decided it wasn't worth spending money on in the future.
I have a life lmao, and I'm busy. Not sure if other nerds are in similar circumstances, but this whole debacle is utterly ridiculous and mean-spirited; I mean, their book is almost $600 (with signatures from Denis Villeneuve, Timothee Chalamet, etc.). I clicked on the "Reserve my Copy" button for the book out of curiosity, since I thought it already sold out. Didn't see anything on that page about it being sold out. I feel lied to about the album situation, lol. Does Insight Editions plan on fooling or even scamming those people who dropped almost $600 (that's an absurd price tag if you ask me; but ya know, super fans are wont to drop hard cash on cool things) on a concept-art book? Probs not, but ya know, this is a negative review; trying to do my part here.
I am still mad, lol, and I still feel bamboozled, even though I'm accepting the absurd humor of the situation. All that waiting to be tricked and to not even dig the music. I wouldn't have been mad to discover I wasn't really getting into the album if I was able to download the music for free, as was advertised. At least I would've gotten a free Hans Zimmer score; I've had worse deals.
So, anyway, there is my hyperbolic, gratuitous, over-explanatory, nagging, and, admittedly, petty review of Insight Editions. I don't really like doing these kinds of things, but there you have it.
Have a nice day.
