Emily Barosse is a bright light in the murky world of agents and publishers. I appreciate informative webinars and her enthusiasm for aspiring authors. I understand that published authors are turning to hybrid publishing too. Thank you, Bold Story Press, for showing the way!

I participated in an online webinar all about book publishing. It covers lots of aspects - approaches to writing a book, the various types of publishing, what design aspects authors need to be aware of. Emily, the host, also left plenty of time for questions and responded to the chat questions. It seemed like a really comprehensive overview and I was happy to know that most of the BSP employees used to work for bigger publishers and now they get more freedom in how they interact with and help authors.

The Writer's Center in Bethesda, MD hosted a presentation by Bold Story Press founder and CEO, Emily Barrosse. She founded Bold Story Press three years ago to change the culture so that women and women's views are better represented in all aspects of life and to help women own their power. Emily asked us to ask ourselves why we wanted to publish our books and for whom we were writing. She challenged us to commit to setting our routines to accommodate learning and practicing the craft of writing. She encouraged us to confront the question of "Who am I to write this book?" How did she know that question had been my own for years. But then, Emily asked us to set that question aside and get on with it. That must be the Bold in Bold Story. Emily laid out the phases of publishing, so we could envision them: writing; editing; design; production; and launch. Then she discussed each in detail, culminating in a description of the types of publishers. These were traditional publishing, self publishing, hybrid publishers such as Bold Story Press, and editorial service providers. The Bold Story Press as a hybrid publisher asks those with whom they agree to work, often as yet unpublished authors, to share in the risk by paying a flat up front fee. In return, Bold Story Press gives you access to experienced editors and designers and you enter into a process that takes about 6 months to get your book publication ready. At this point the manuscript needs to go out for pre-publication reviews. This was a short summary of Emily Barrosse's presentation. She covered each of these topics in accessible detail and then offered to be available to each attendee for a brief chat, which I felt was very kind and generous. The presentation gave me a deeper understanding of the publication process and made me feel hopeful that I too might be able to go on this journey.
