My husband and I did a genetic carrier screening and we're not happy with the service. We had a 1 hour call with a Genetic Counselor and asked what the cost was for the procedure, they couldn't answer and didn't offer to transfer us with the accounting department either. They are not clear about the cost of their services at all. All they did was refer us to a lab which I have to pay separately.

Zero communication, zero follow up, lied to about the status of my billing. Told they were filing the necessary paperwork to fight denial from insurance, only to wait two months for follow up to be told they don’t do that and they don’t know who told me that. This company should be investigated for fraud.

Three stars are because my first genetics counselor was great. They were kind and allowed me to speak. Once I got my results, I paid 200.00 for a follow-up because I had specific questions about an identified deleterious variant of unknown significance (VUS) that fit my symptoms. I booked an appointment for Saturday and ended up speaking with another counselor Angela Filose. She immediately launched into her explanation of what the results were. It felt more like she was pontificating about the subject than allowing me to ask questions. I paid 200.00 for a 32 minute visit and she talked 28 minutes of it. I had to cut her off twice to ask two small questions. She had no idea that my symptoms fit the VUS, or that multiple computational algorithms concluded this VUS would be deleterious with a REVEL score of 8.9 and PP3 moderate. I also have 2 more family members who are symptomatic with the same neurological disease. My maternal grandfather and mother also had it. This counselor tried to contact Variantyx to see about a family testing option, but her write up seems like Variantyx thinks it wasn't necessary. (probably because I had to write an email to Variantyx citing HIPAA to to get my results - another story). I guess no one is interested in potentially identifying a new pathogenic variant. I wish I would have chosen another day for my follow-up appointment so that I could have spoken to someone else and had more time to ask questions. I would rather not listen to someone condescend and pontificate for half an hour. Thankfully, someone in a support group put me in contact with a Neurogeneticist who is willing to dive into a VUS and look for answers. They were identified with the disease and their neurogeneticist was able to get their VUS classified as pathogenic.
