Where Our Taxes Went on Vacation

Here’s a plot twist: after two years with Keys Accounting, we found out from the IRS that none of our business taxes were ever filed. That’s right—three years’ worth! We signed off, and were told everything was “taken care of.” Surprise! Now we’re left with unfiled returns, missed deductions, and a tax mess.

To be fair, we tried to roll with their challenges—family losses, peak-season vacations, surgeries, key employees leaving, you name it. We wanted to be understanding. But our sympathy doesn’t pay IRS penalties, and professionalism shouldn’t go on holiday.

If you’re in the Florida Keys, listen up: we’ve learned other local businesses have had the same experience. Wish we’d known sooner, so we’re telling you now. Avoid Keys Accounting unless you want to be the next “plot twist.”

I am a HOA Community Manager and with the new Legislation that was passed, all of our HOA Boards have to file with the IRS for the Corporate Transparancy Act. For the HOA industry, we were all kind of blindsided with this because HOA Boards are not-for-profit and do not recieve any government funds. Keys Accounting has offered a service to the communities we serve to handle the process for the boards so that they do not have to worry about being in compliance as it will be managed for them.

Several of the Communities I manage have elected to go with Key's Accounting for this process and even in just the inital week, I have recieved comments from all of those Boards aboout how happy they were that they selected Keys Accounting to handle the process of filing on their Behalf.

Donnette has been the one working with my Boards and all of them have told me how wonderful and sweet Donnette is, and how accommodating she has been in helping them navigate getting the required personal and sensitive information to her to get it filed properly. They have also said how she has made the somewhat intimidating process very easy and stress-free!

BEWARE OF KEYS ACCOUNTING! DO NOT WORK WITH SANDI!

After contacting the IRS, we were shocked to discover that three years of our business tax filings were NEVER submitted. Despite signing, paying, and being assured by Keys Accounting that everything was handled, the IRS has no record of our business taxes. To make matters worse, our 2023 personal tax return was also never filed, leaving us past the filing deadline. This gross negligence has resulted in missed deductions, unfiled returns, and significant financial consequences. Sandra K. Haab, the individual responsible, has since been fired.

Our experience with Keys Accounting has been nothing short of a nightmare. We initially hired them in October 2022 to address back taxes, expecting a professional resolution. Instead, as of November 2024, promises remain unfulfilled, and we were handed a $10,000 bill for incomplete work. Essential tasks, such as:
• Quarterly tax setup,
• Payroll processing, and
• Filing of 2023 taxes

All remain undone.

Communication with Sandra K. Haab was consistently unprofessional and unreliable. Important documents were repeatedly lost, forcing us to resend critical information multiple times, with no accountability. Countless email exchanges reveal Sandra’s frequent absences, claiming she was away and unavailable, which severely delayed our progress. Additionally, key tax credits for our home office, solar purchase, and vehicle deductions were completely missed, costing us thousands. Attempts to raise concerns were met with dismissive excuses rather than solutions.

We’ve since learned that many other small businesses in the Florida Keys have faced similar issues with Keys Accounting. We deeply regret not speaking to them sooner, as this could have saved us from the stress, wasted time, and financial hardship we’ve endured.

To ensure others don’t face the same ordeal, we will be reporting Sandra K. Haab and Keys Accounting to the IRS and the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).
