I discovered the Love and Logic technique many years ago when my kids were quite little. I bought cassette after cassette and later CD after CD. I listened to them over and over and used the techniques daily. I shared the gold nuggets of information with friends. (One friend wrote to me not that long ago to thank me for the advice I gave her during some rough times as it was the most helpful advice she got and it was all straight from Love and Logic.) We made it through the teen years relatively smoothly. My children are now 29, 27 and 23 and are happy, thriving adults who learned well how to make good decisions. I currently have a co-worker with young kids and as we talk about the daily challenges they face, I hear the Love and Logic advice flowing out of my mouth. She has utilized the tidbits with incredible results. She is more relaxed and her children are thinking through choices. Thank you for helping me raise happy, productive adults. I am so grateful for love and logic! For tools when you’re angry, overwhelmed, or at a loss of what to do. I found myself slipping into old habits recently and it wasn’t working for me or my kids. I have been using Love and Logic since a fellow teacher introduced me to the cassette tapes in 1999. When I had kids my husband and I took the class at our Parents as Teachers group. I knew it was the best way to get him on board with what I knew was a great way to raise kids. He loved it and we embarked on Parenting the Love and Logic Way for our kids' first 10 years. I was then working at our church in Children's Ministry and decided it was time to bring Love and Logic to others. My husband and I started facilitating the class and averaged about 10 couples 2-3 times a year for 7 years. I have since left that job and have facilitated a few classes in the last several years. My daughters have called many times as they have become young adults to ask their dad or I how Love and Logic would handle whatever situation they were in. Sometimes it was babysitting, or college roommates, or sorority leadership conflicts. We have so many stories of how Love and Logic shaped our kids and our relationships with them.
Recently one of our daughters has started graduate school to become a Marriage and Family Therapist. She was thrown into a mock session her first week of class with an arguing couple. The session ended after 20 minutes where she was able to get the couple to stop yelling, stop talking over one another, and talk about saving their marriage. Afterwards her professor asked her where she had learned her skills. Her only answer was that she had been raised with Love and Logic and the professor replied, "Well that makes sense." As a mom, grandmother, educator, and writer, I have read tons of books and been trained in so many different parenting and classroom management training programs. Love and Logic takes the gold medal hands-down, no contest! It also make being around kids so much more fun when you can enjoy them and, when a problem does come up, handle it with grace and confidence with that large dollop of empathy and love! Having been a School Counselor for 29 years and a Facilitator of Love and Logic for over 25 years, I have seen first hand how this approach transcends generations in its ability to support children and parents. I have truly enjoyed the Love and Logic experience. I have applied the principles to my own children and to my students. Surprisingly, I found that when I moved from public school teaching to correctional education with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the same principles worked effectively. Love and Logic truly changed my life. I stumbled across it 17 years ago when I had 2 very young children. Now I have 6 wonderful children ages 9-21. 17 years later, I am so grateful that I took parenting courses multiple times, read some of their books, listened to some of their audios and read their weekly newsletter.
