The staff of Maine Authors Publishing are very nice and they are very capable technically. But beware of the hidden costs of working with them, including an annual fee of $225, required even when your book sales fall over time. In addition, they have an inadequate company tax reporting system, which can cost you hundreds of dollars more. This is due to the fact that M.A.P. charges authors for book printing up front. They reimburse these printing costs at the time of sale, book by book. The problem comes at tax time when M.A.P. files its IRS 1099 MISC form. They report the total dollar amount they pay out to authors as royalties, even though the lion's share of these checks are printing cost reimbursements. They then leave it to you to claim "business expenses." But good luck with the accounting complexities as your printing costs may have been paid to them years earlier. Unfortunately, you end up taking the loss to avoid getting cross-wise with the IRS. What M.A.P. should do, like a stock with capital gains, is develop a "basis" for their payments to authors, and separate this out from the true and taxable royalties paid to authors.
