I placed an order with OUP online for two books. I paid by credit card and received a confirmation email from them stating my books should arrive in 7-10 business days.

I periodically checked my OUP account online and the order status was, “In Progress”. I waited for three weeks (15 business days) and sent messages through their Customer Service website asking for details on my order. I ended up sending three of these messages over two weeks expecting some kind of response – even an automated email would have been nice. But I received nothing.

Frustrated that their customer service messaging is completely ignored, I called customer service. The Customer Service Rep said that one of the books I ordered was not in stock. I asked why this was not indicated when I made the purchase (like every other bookstore, including Amazon does) and I got, “I’m sorry”. I asked why I did not receive an email indicating that the order was on hold until the back-ordered text was in stock? That seems like good customer service and certainly something that could be automated. He said, “I’m sorry”. Then the rep said he would cancel the order, and I would have to reorder the books.

I did reorder the books, and I received a confirmation email indicting that.

Weeks go by and I look at my OUP account and see that BOTH orders are, “In progress”. I certainly didn’t need two copies of the same books, so I called Customer Service again.

The Customer Service Rep checked and saw that the first order was cancelled. I asked why my account still gave the cancelled order as, “In Progress” and he said sometimes customer accounts are not updated. I asked, “What is the purpose of the status and account if I cannot get accurate and updated information?” and he said, “I’m sorry”.

Next, he said there must be a problem with my email if I had not received messages from OUP. I pointed out that this is the same email I received OUP order confirmations from. So how could it possibly be my email? “I’m sorry”.

A couple of days later I get an email from OUP Customer Service saying that the orders were not going through because my Billing Address did not line up with my credit card Billing Address. I logged into my OUP account and saw that my default billing address was correct, and the second order had a different address - which is odd because I set my default billing address to the correct address. Why would the billing address change from the first order to the second order? I set it as my default, that address is by DEFAULT my billing address. Perhaps the OUP should go to Amazon and order an OED and check the definition of 'default'.

Several days later I went back to view my OUP account, and both orders were still posted as, "In Progress". I called customer service and was told their system was 'down' and they 'were sorry' but they could not assist me. That did not surprise me - as it seems like their customer service department is a complete mess.

OUP and OUP Customer Service appear to have a complete disregard for their customers. With customer accounts that are not updated, a "system" that does not function properly, no communication about the status of orders, and apologies. But this is the status quo I guess where customers are an afterthought, ignored and dismissed. But they sure will take your money!

People wonder why so many folks turn to Amazon, I ordered the exact same books, of the exact same editions from Amazon and they will be here in three days (and two dollars cheaper). That is why people turn to Amazon - because others are just not trying hard enough.

Terrible service.

OUP is illegally charging sales tax on digital purchases in many states in the United States. Most states in America do not tax digital purchases. I was illegally charged sales tax recently and I'm in California. I have engaged OUP customer service about this and they have stopped communicating with me and refused to refund me the fraudulent sales tax charge. I am now going to file court papers against OUP. OUP has a pretty large legal issue on their hands and owe a lot of Americans money for illegally charged sales tax. If you have made a digital purchase, like a downloaded research article or subscription to a digital journal, in the United States from OUP then there is a good chance you were illegally charged sales tax as well. You can take legal action against OUP and get your money back.
